Rallying Cyclists for Cancer Research at Moffitt Cancer Center

April 1, 2008 - Cycling events to raise money for charity have become very popular in recent years, and now Cure on Wheels is taking the idea for a spin. The first annual Cure on Wheels, a ride of 165 miles along the scenic roadways of Pasco and Hernando counties, will take place rain or shine on the weekend of May 30 to June 1, starting in St. Leo.

Cure on Wheels, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 corporation, organized the event with proceeds going to research at Moffitt Cancer Center. “More has been done in the last 20 years to overcome cancer than in the last 20 centuries,” said Bill Riddle, Cure on Wheels president and executive director. “More and more patients are being saved. But only research can speed up the process and find the final answers,” he said.

The event takes off May 30 with check-in at St. Leo University, which is providing accommodations for riders on its campus. On Saturday, one-day riders cycle either a 65- or 105-mile course. Two-day riders spend an additional night on campus and cycle a 60-mile loop on Sunday. The ride features water stops every 20 miles, a lunch stop, sag wagons, and mechanical and medical help. Portions of the ride include the Withlacoochee and Suncoast trails, along with some of the most scenic roadways in the Tampa Bay area.

Registration is $150, and the deadline is May 30. Fees include up to two nights at St. Leo University, food, entertainment and a bike shirt. Riders must commit to raise $500 to participate in the event. Registration information is available on the Cure on Wheels Web site at www.cureonwheels.org. You also may e-mail info@cureonwheels.org, or call Bill Riddle at (813) 350-7900.

April 1, 2008 – Joyce Austin, a breast cancer survivor who says she receives exceptional care at Moffitt Cancer Center, has made it her mission to encourage others to join her in the fight against cancer. She is hosting A Sparkling Pink Cancer Awareness Luncheon fundraiser to celebrate men and women who have survived breast cancer. The inaugural event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 19 at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorships are available. My faith and Moffitt saved my life and I have to tell others,” Austin said. “Moffitt is the lifeline of the Tampa Bay community, so I encourage everyone to join me and support Moffitt’s mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.”

The luncheon comes only a day before National Minority Cancer Awareness Week (NMCAW) begins. NMCAW is recognized to foster collaboration with local agencies and organizations to develop programs that reach ethnic minority groups with cancer prevention, early detection and screening information. The luncheon will feature two experts who will discuss the importance of minorities, and the whole community, knowing about cancer risks.

“Health disparities impact all of us,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., the vice president of the Office of Institutional Diversity at Moffitt, who will be on the panel. “We should be striving for the best health for all communities regardless or race, ethnicity, income, or geographical location.” Green will be joined by Dr. Mokenge Malafa, the division chief of the gastrointestinal oncology program at Moffitt.

A Sparkling Pink Awareness Luncheon also will include a candlelight memorial to honor those who have died from cancer. Nursing Group Names Moffitt Cancer Center Employer of the Year

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation has honored Moffitt Cancer Center as one of the best places to work for oncology nurses.

The ONCC employer recognition award is presented annually to an organization that has provided support and recognition of oncology nursing certification to its nursing staff.

ONCC has named Moffitt Cancer Center 2008 Employer of the Year. This is Moffitt's first time receiving the award, winning among 14 nominations nationally.

"The dedication and professionalism of our nurses has made this an easy award for us to attain," said Theresa Papa-Rodriguez, patient care manager and chair of Moffitt's nursing recruitment and retention committee.

The qualifications for the ONCC employer recognition award include the following: certification credentials mentioned in job descriptions, financial support provided for examinations, organization-wide acknowledgment of achievements, salary recognition and paid time off for ONCC Board participation and committee work.

Moffitt offers financial support to nurses who choose to pursue certification. After completion, Moffitt recognizes its nurses through a nurses' week reception and credentials inscribed on name badges and business cards.

"I personally believe that Moffitt has always been an employer of choice. I am thrilled that we have finally received this recognition," said Sheila Ferrall, an oncology clinical specialist at Moffitt.

Moffitt nurses will receive an award plaque at the ONCC Recognition Breakfast at the Oncology Nursing Society Annual Congress in Philadelphia in May.
